Daly Used to Warm Up with a Cig, a Swing, and a Sausage Roll – In That Order

There’s a fine line between genius and madness — and John Daly tap-danced across it in cowboy boots, puffing a Marlboro and chugging Diet Coke like it was holy water. While most PGA Tour pros are counting macros, stretching hamstrings, and dialing in their TrackMan numbers before a round, Daly’s warm-up routine looked more like a truck stop pit stop.

And yet, somehow, it worked.

The ‘Preparation’ Routine That Became a Legend

John Daly never needed a launch monitor to tell him how he felt. His pre-round ritual was gloriously simple: “I hit balls for maybe 20 minutes, putt a little bit, smoke 4 or 5 cigarettes, drink three Diet Cokes and go to the first tee.” That’s not paraphrased. That’s straight from the man himself.

And on some days? He didn’t even bother with the range.

For golfers who obsess over tempo drills and pre-shot routines, Daly’s approach sounds like heresy. But it wasn’t a one-off or some kind of rebellious publicity stunt — it was his normal. He made it to the first tee with a nicotine buzz, a belly full of artificial sweetener, and nothing but raw talent and muscle memory to guide him.

Diet Coke and a Dash of Chaos

While most athletes are pounding electrolyte drinks and nibbling on protein bars, Daly opted for Diet Coke — and lots of it. Before he even teed off, three cans were gone. During rounds, the number could hit double digits. At the 2007 PGA Championship, Daly casually downed 13 Diet Cokes en route to a first-round 67.

He wasn’t just leaning on caffeine — he was leaning on decades of pure feel. That same round reportedly included a few Snickers bars and exactly zero swings on the range beforehand.

Greensboro, 2008: The Full Daly Menu

To truly understand the scale of Daly’s anti-prep diet, you have to go back to a practice round at the 2008 Wyndham Championship. Sportswriter Will Brinson shadowed Daly and meticulously documented his intake:

  • 21 cigarettes
  • 12 Diet Cokes
  • 6 packs of Peanut M&M’s
  • 0 ounces of water

This was on a sweltering day in Greensboro, North Carolina — peak summer heat, humidity hovering at sauna levels. Brinson summed it up best: “Greensboro in mid-August with nothing but M&M’s, cigs and DCs is basically like crawling through the Sahara.”

Most of us would need an IV drip. Daly just needed another cigarette.

Still Doing Daly Things in 2024

Fast forward to the 2024 PGA Championship. You’d think Father Time or maybe a cardiologist would’ve toned things down. Nope.

Golf reporter Gabby Herzig followed Daly’s group at Valhalla and reported two packs of cigarettes, four Snickers bars, and two Cokes consumed during the round. “I too was shocked at the 2 Cokes figure,” she added — as if two was somehow the shocking part.

The man may be in his late 50s, but his metabolism — or his stubbornness — refuses to quit.

When Zero Warm-Up Becomes a Flex

The pinnacle of Daly’s preparation philosophy came during the 2022 PNC Championship. His son, John Daly II, was hunting around the range, likely assuming his dad was hitting balls somewhere. Nope.

Big John was at the first tee, cigarette in one hand, a couple Diet Cokes poured into a to-go cup in the other.

“They have a range here?” he asked, deadpan.

His warm-up routine that day?

  • 0 range balls
  • 0 chips
  • 0 putts

“Ready to go, baby,” he said.

And get this: he backed it up. Team Daly birdied seven of their first nine holes, posted a front-nine 29, and finished with a 59. They nearly defended their title, finishing just two shots back.

Zero prep. Near victory. The myth lives on.

The Body’s Breaking, But the Swagger Stays

Now, it’s not all comedy and candy bars. Daly’s lack of warm-up isn’t entirely by choice anymore. At the same 2022 PNC event, he revealed he was due for knee replacement surgery the following week. His swing was modified — all arm and upper body, hanging back on his right side, avoiding weight transfer to his busted left leg.

He’s had multiple surgeries and jokes he’s “got more metal than the Bionic Man.” Some of the minimalist routine is a necessity. But the rest? Still 100% Daly.

Against the Grain — and Still Getting It Done

Put Daly’s prep next to Tiger Woods’ old routine and it’s almost satirical. Woods once described his daily tournament prep like this: four-mile run, gym session, hours on the range, a full 18, short game work, another run, then some basketball or tennis for “fun.”

Meanwhile, Daly’s lifting nothing but Diet Coke cans and still managing to card competitive rounds.

It’s absurd. And kind of inspiring.

Because while the modern game is all about marginal gains and precision nutrition, Daly is living proof that sometimes, raw feel and fierce belief can still move the needle — even if it’s coated in peanut M&M dust.
